A day in the fog 27/06/2009

We set off to go bass fishing in glorious sunshine but by the time we reached our first mark we were in fog as thick as custard and it lasted all day.The bait we had was top quality sand eels trawled the day before and 60 joey mackerel caught on the way, it wasn't long before we were into the bass.Fish came steady for about three hours about 80-90 in total with many catch and releases.

After are fill of bass fishing we decided to fish a wreck for bream and tope, but what we encountered were congers up to 73lb including five anglers into fish all at the same time and Peg Leg Ernie catching a bream of 4lb. By late afternoon the tide had turned and was starting to push too hard to fish it with any sense so it was time too up the hook and head for home in the fog. There was plenty of banter with everyone getting in on the act and saying it was not fair that the skipper won the money for the biggest fish with a conger, well i thought it was a great idea from start to Finnish

It all started at 7-30 am when we set off for a day's fishing on the cod grounds in mid channel.The weather was a bit confused after the storms that had passed through in the night leaving a fresh SSW breeze, there were a few strange looks as we passed Old Harry but with a confident "it will get better" from the skipper we pressed on regardless.On approaching the cod grounds the biggest black cloud you had ever seen arrived an the wind freshened up for 45 minutes then dropped again then the rain took over and tipped down for about an hour.The first drift produced 1 cod then two more drifts were blanco so we made a move to the East. After the move we had fish on every drift throughout the day which was a result if you could keep away from Harry and his tangle machine the picture just showing just one of his efforts to preserve the cod stocks for another day.With 54 cod on board we decided to call it a day and head for home in glorious sunshine and a wonderful flat sea.

The trip home was a fine conclusion to the day with cheese and biscuits all washed down with 4 yes 4 bottles of finest Lidles port and a few beers with plenty of banter while the gay hairdresser steered us home safely.

After setting out to mid channel for a days cod fishing the target for the day was to beat last years best day of 214 cod.The weather was glorious and with a good tide we set about the task but having got off to a slow start we had only landed 42 fish by 12-00 so i decided to make a move to the west. On arrival at the next waypoint the first drift asccounted for another 9 fish so we were off and running and by 17-00 the anglers were starting to tire and by 17-50 only three anglers were left fishing. At 18-10 fish number 205 was landed and released and the day was called to an end just short of our target but whata grand day's fishing so you could say the cod have arrived

Phil Carling with the 3lb 5oz bream which gave Crimson Tide the prize of top charter boat and £400 for the anglers to share between themselves in the poole dolphins open bream comp on sunday the 10th May sponsored by Andy at Poole Sea angling Centre. The boat had a total of 100 plus fish with 10 fish kept and all the rest returned to fight another day.

Well we fished the legs earlier this week so we decided to go even further in the fine weather. To say the weather was good was an under statement it was flat calm and wall to wall sunshine lets hope the fishing would match up . We had already decided on our destination but we just had to try one small wreck on the way that we had never fished before, the first two drifts produced 8 fish to live sand eels then nothing for next three drifts so we pushed on. The next wreck paid dividends with fish straight away and all through the tide until slack water when it died. We put on hopper rigs to try for for an unlucky cod , but all the hopper rigs produced were large pout up to 4lb 1oz not bad for a smelly.

We decided to head for home and try the small wreck we had tried on the way, but it was just as we had left it blanco strange seems it had started so promising. The tally for the day 50-60 Pollock up to 16lb and of course the smelly which rolly is holding .

Fished an area called the Rip's today and to say the tide was ripping would be an under statement it was like trying to fish a washing machine , so we soon put a stop to that idea and steamed south for another 18 miles to find one of Adolph's rusting battleships. With 8 anglers on board we had just over 80 pollack in 3 hours and no "COD" with most of the fish 30-50 turns up in the water which were all were caught on live eels. The weather conditions were fair if you don't include the rain and the ground swell which was making the ships bury their bows in the morning , but by mid afternoon the conditions were great for the steam home.

Well to start our day off we had a 25 mile steam to get sand eels which were to be used for bait and certainly ended up paying high dividends. After arriving at the first wreck which was yet another 24 mile steam south of Portland we soon had 41 Pollock on board between the three of us, and in two and a half hours thats not bad fishing i must admit, but that left us with a 42 mile steam home with plenty of time to talk about the day i.e getting on the boat at 7-15am and getting back to port at 11pm,that is one long day.The two in the picture are Tommy Smith on the left and Ronny Lake on the right with some of the catch, with the best Pollock going 13lb 5oz.

The day started with 6 of the most unlikely candidates led by David Fagan. The weather for the day was not favourable with a strong NNW wind and a big spring tide we talked tactics whilst they tucked into there bacon rolls and fresh piping hot coffee. We came up with the idea of fishing dancing ledge for early bream or the odd undulate ray ,Well that plan didn’t work at all, all we had was two dogfish so I decided to go 7 miles south to catch the slackening tide and try to fish a wreck. On arriving the wind was howling from the north and bloody cold and four of the lads were being quite ill, after a quick drift to estimate the tide it showed it had eased down to 1.5 knots good enough to chuck the hook in.
Within 10 minutes we had and lost our first conger then lanky who was 6ft7in tall caught an eel of 46lb which gave us a good bench mark to carry on for the next hour and a half in the tide window. In all we landed 5 eels between 31lb and 46lb and dropped 4 so worth the effort but of all things I forgot to bring the camera so no pictures. We then returned back to dancing ledge to try the ebb but to no avail just the odd dogfish again so while dodging the rain storms we returned to port and agreed that it had been a good day in tough conditions.

With a fine day weather wise in prospect we pushed off out to the Rip's to fish the small neap tide which woud give us the chance to fish the wrecks and banks which would normally be unfishable. James smith with his first eel of the day which pushed the scales to 72lb which was the new boat record, it was a lively beast which he could not hold up for the photo, shame does not do the eel justice.In total we had 15 eels and 3 rays up to 26lb 6oz plus the usual bits and pieces to keep them ocupied while Craig ate all the pie's.

Well there both smiling and so they should be James with his new Pb of 26lb 6oz and the ray swam away for another day. James also had another ray with his next cast which weighed in at 16lb 10oz which was also released, all fish caught were released with the exception of a conger of 20lb which was to be eaten, personally i would have preferred to have taken the bait home and cooked the squid and mackerel but then what do i know about cooking fish??

Well this was the 50th cod in 17 trips not bad, that gives us a 3 fish average. The fishing has definitely got more difficult in the freezing weather conditions but we keep on persevering. The tally for the day was 1Cod 10lb2oz , 1 Spotted Ray and towards slack water some good Channel Whiting up to 3lb and the usual dogs and pout . As for the Cod , that was kept it in the live well for an hour until we decided to release it along with the spotted ray in a way of celebration of reaching our goal of 50 cod for the winter which meant we all had a good day including the cod.

Stan a Graham with the two cod caught 10lb 4oz & 8lb 4oz not a bad effort for the day this got Stan 5th place and a good prize. A good day's fishing which amounted to 2 cod 6 skate and some whiting to 3lb thrown in for good measure.This takes our tally of cod to 49 for the season .

Well we gave the island a miss and decided to go off shore for a change but all we caught were congers around the 20lb mark so we decided to go off further still . This move soon payed dividends as Rolly caught a nice starry smooth hound to kick start the day with . Then the tide started pushing and we were on 2lb of lead pluss but still the fish kept comming with congers , pollock and whiting putting up some good scraps in the tide. We decided to move inshore at slack water to fish the flood tide with lighter tackle . About 2hrs after the move Tommy latched into the cod which we had been searching for throughout the day so the plan payed off in the end.

Mr DannyFox one of the three wise men with the only cod of the day but still another to the tally .We had plenty of action with the channel whiting as they were in abundance all day . The weather was a fresh norwesterly for the whole day and very cold. Mr Rolly Bigs also had an offering of a nice thornback ray of 11lb 9oz which was released.

Well we keep trying for the big one but its not happening at this time. Cold start to the day but what great weather followed with a rubbish tide. The bites were hard to come by with the lack of tide and even the pout and dogs didn't want to play. By the end of the day we had winkled out two which was nearly as difficult as getting rolly to share his lunch, but with a stunning sunset to finish with it made a good day memorable . Total now 42 in twelve trips

Left to right R Biggs jnr , Rolly (the absent minded plumber) Biggs and Tommy (viagra) Smith with some of the catch . In total they caught 6 Cod up to 17lb 7oz , 2 Bass , 4 Congers up to 52lb and the useuall dogs, pout,and whitting. A great day out but with very cold conditions to start with helped along with a fresh north easterly wind. You know that , when you have to put your hands in a bucket of sea water to warm them up. The weather then improved from lunchtime onwards and turned into a glorious afternoon and evening. A realy good day's fishing which now takes our tally of cod up to 37 in ten trips .

Mad man Hawkeye with a fine cod of 15lb 3oz a new personel best for him, he then had a conger of 51lb another personel best not bad for a very cold misty saturday.The conditions wernt the best but the fishing was not to bad 2 Cod up to 15lb3oz ,6 Congers up to 51 lb,1pollack of 14lb6oz,and a fine undulate of 16lb 8oz all mixed in with plenty of dogs pout and whiting.This now takes us to 31 cod in 9 trips not bad.
